![]() Although the Bellini is a simple cocktail, too many versions are syrupy sweet and obscure the flavor of the Prosecco. On a recent visit, my guest and I sampled raspberry, strawberry, and mango in addition to the peach. The new Bellini offerings include the “traditional” white peach version as well as a rotating selection of other fruit flavors. This cocktail became one of the most popular drinks for the early hours of the day and remains a brunch favorite. He named the drink after a Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini based on the color of the cocktail – perfectly matching the color of the robe worn by a saint in one of Bellini’s paintings. The Bellini was first created in the late 1930s by Giuseppe Cipriani, owner of Harry’s Bar in Venice using the delicious white peaches native to the Veneto. They are now giving weekends an upgrade with a Bellini Brunch, Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. Recently, they rolled out a new addition to their already superb menu. Carmine’s has long been a place where those in the know choose to eat. The menu boasts Rosebud’s classic Italian American dishes, as well as premium steaks, chops, and seafood offerings. Since 1994, one of the best and most enduring has been Carmine’s located at 1043 North Rush Street.Ĭarmine’s is a part of the iconic Rosebud restaurant group. It’s hard to walk more than a few yards without passing a superior restaurant. Think "street." Think "sidewalk." The Dept of Planning and Development and Alderman Reilly need to focus on street level just as much as on the upper 95 per cent of any development. The Gold Coast has long been one of the most concentrated areas in the city for fine dining. ![]() The city needs to be very careful about the plans for the sites at the NW corner of State and Elm and the SW corner of Oak and Rush. That sort of street-level activity is essential to prevent a loss of vitality. The beer gardens (and yes, they qualify as beer gardens) in front of the Cedar Hotel will be gone, though part of their footprint reportedly will feature some sort of cafe. The Cedar Hotel facade will survive as the base of a boutique hotel. There will be several more high-rises along the street in the next five years, including one at the Cedar Hotel site. The singles-bar-attached-to-restaurant is the other main theme these days. ![]() Rush Street always had restaurants with outdoor seating, but the restaurant explosion has outstripped any dance club or live music scene. I first experienced it the disco and jazz club days of the late 1970's. This street is very important to our city. I agree completely with the points raised by edsg. However, I often bring friends from out of town there. I experience Rush Street mostly during the day, walking to do errands. I am looking down at Carmine's and Tavern on Rush as I type this post. Rush Street, IMHO, needs to keep much of its low scale atmospher to truly survive. Kelly's forgotten and unknown to many, will the still strong character remain and, if so, what is the city going to do to retain it? What is the future of the street? Will the number of high rises that go up be limited, thus keeping the retail/restaurant/clubs in tact on the streetcase? Will Rush be able to remain a valley or gulch between high rises on either side of it? And while the character of the club era is long gone and Mr. Rush Street at this point seems to be most charactereized by see-and-be-seen restaurants, increasingly upscale retail, and a definite and growing high rise residential component. Near North property values and the pressure for Mag Mile retail space has altered the character today. Its fame.in Chicago and to a degree nationally.came from the nightclubs and bars that once lined it. It is one of those special streets that has its own, unmistakable character. I mentioned Rush Street on a thread on iconic streets on the US forum.
